The Japan-based Takata Corporation is one of the world’s largest airbag manufacturers, accounting for about one fifth of the world’s airbag production as of 2014.  Takata airbags are installed in hundreds of different foreign and domestic vehicles, including cars, trucks, and SUVs made by Honda, Toyota, BMW, Ford, Subaru, Volkswagen, and other major brands.

In late 2008, Honda recalled about 4,000 vehicles after it became apparent that Takata-manufactured airbags can suffer from defects which cause them to explode, showering drivers and front-seat passengers with a spray of debris.  Projectile debris can cause lacerations or puncture wounds to vehicle occupants’ faces, throats, chests, arms, hands, and any other body parts which are exposed.  As of early 2016, the recall has expanded to an astounding 34 million vehicles.

Injuries and fatalities have been attributed to exploding Takata airbags dating back to the tragic death of Oklahoma City teenager Ashley Parham in 2009.  Parham’s vehicle was a 2001 Honda Accord sedan.
