Bed Sore Lawsuit Settled Against Nursing Home

According to the family of a 77-year-old stroke patient, the last four months of her life at the Evergreen Health Center were “pure hell.” The woman’s granddaughter has finally reached a settlement with Evergreen Health Care Center LLC, for $575,000.

According to the lawsuit, the patient was immobilized by a stroke. During her stay at the Evergreen Health Center, her skin was eaten by bed sores. Bed sores are injuries caused to a person’s skin and underlying tissue that develop when a person experiences prolonged pressure on a particular area of their body. In this case, bed sores resulted when the patient was not turned properly throughout the day.

The lawsuit claimed that Evergreen, a for-profit nursing home, failed to “properly prevent, monitor and treat Ms. Beard’s bed sores, and these injuries contributed to her death.” Moreover, her granddaughter claimed that “a lot of times we came in on weekends and evenings and she smelled like she hadn’t been changed.”

Cook County court records show that between the years of 2001 and 2012, approximately 25 lawsuits have been filed against Evergreen Health Care Center LLC. Evergreen Health Care Center has since been under new management. Current staff members have reportedly undergone over 5,000 hours of new training.
