Oklahoma Hip Replacement FAQ

How many people have had problems with DePuy hip replacement systems?

The FDA has received more than 400 complaints alone. It is estimated that of the 93,000 people who have received these implants, one in eight will require revision surgery within five years. That adds up to approximately 11,000 people. Clearly, you are not alone if you are suffering from the complications associated with these products.

What are these problems?

In addition to the need for additional surgery, complications/problems associated with DePuy hip replacement systems include:

  • Inexplicable hip pain
  • Pain in the thigh or groin
  • Pain while walking or rising from a seated position
  • Loose hip cups
  • Hip dislocations
  • Bone fractures
  • Metallosis
  • Pseudotumors from metal debris
  • Allergic reactions
  • Permanent muscle and tissue damage

Will new surgery repair the problems?

This is a complex question. A typical hip replacement surgery lasts about 15 years, then another is often required. Given the high failure rate of DePuy systems, and the possibility that additional surgery will be required within five years, the whole dynamic of the process has been altered. Also, given the range of serious side effects, complications and potentially irreversible damage caused by these defective products, there is no guarantee that additional surgery will ultimately prove successful.

What should I do if I am or have already been contacted by DePuy?

You should know that the compensation offered by DePuy may not cover all the expenses incurred after hip replacement surgery and will not cover many of the diagnostic or blood tests needed to make sure you are healthy and not at risk for the adverse effects associated with bodily absorption of metals, i.e. metallosis. Nor will it account for pain and suffering, lost wages or loss of future earning potential. In short, you should not sign anything sent to you by DePuy or the physician who performed your surgery. Contact an experienced personal injury/medical malpractice attorney first.

What if I’ve had this surgery already but I’m not in pain now? Should I contact an attorney?
