Denture Cream Cases Are Getting Settled

Bloomberg reported earlier this week that GlaxoSmithKline has bad at least $120 million for more than 100 lawsuits over the Poligrip/zinc related health issues. The settlements average more than $1 million each:

The FDA recently suggested to denture cream manufacturers that they should consider taking zinc out of their products. The Wall Street Journal notes that zinc is added to denture cream to boost its adhesive properties, but:

Symptoms of zinc toxicity include nerve damage or numbness in the extremities and blood disorders. High doses of zinc can cause a copper deficiency, which studies have shown can cause nerve damage. The FDA said that zinc overexposure “maybe be a contributing factor in these adverse events.”

Contact your doctor if you are currently using denture cream with zinc in it.

Poligrip to remove zinc from their denture creams

The Daily Mail reports that Drug firm removes zinc from denture glue over health fears. GlaxoSmithKline is the manufacturer of Poligrip.

The article goes on to mention that the zinc from the denture cream is not absorbed in the mouth, but when swallowed. The journal Neurology recently published a study with denture patients suffering neurological symptoms.

If you’re using dentures, make sure you purchase a product that is labeled as “zinc-free.”
